The cemetery was established in 1868 for the early pioneers of the area. Charles Arnold was the first person buried there. Many of the people buried in the cemetery still have relatives who live in and around the Town Of Butte Falls.

Karen Davis (Sexton), the local volunteer steward, first walked throughout the cemetery as a child with her parents and grandparents. This is where she developed a love of the early people found throughout the area. She has volunteered for 29 years working with the funeral homes, community, and anyone needing assistance at the cemetery. The Town of Butte Falls appreciates the 2022 Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries grant and the volunteer help that cleared brush and placed protective fencing around the cemetery perimeters. An Oregon Heritage grant that same year funded the development of a self guided walking tour of the historic Butte Falls Cemetery.
